AI visibility audits are now part of routine SEO work
Any SEO team has a standing list of things it monitors: rankings, crawl errors, page speed, structured data, backlink health. Over the past two years a new item has moved onto that list and quickly climbed it. Does AI mention this business, and if not, why not?
Several months ago we added AI visibility auditing to our standard review process. As with every method we adopt, we ran the first full pass against our own website before taking it to a client.
We did not appear.
Not ranked low. Not present in the answer at all. Meanwhile our organic rankings were healthy, our uptime was fine, and by every metric we had been tracking for years the site looked good. That gap is the point of this article. The signals that make a site rank are not the same signals that make a site quotable, and a business can be doing well on the first while failing completely on the second without knowing it.
So the review became a build. We wrote protocols instead of findings. We tested our own site the way an AI agent reads it rather than the way a person reads it, which turns out to be a completely different thing. We changed something, waited, tested again, and repeated, because this is a field where the honest answer is often "we will know in three weeks."
What we found was uncomfortable in places. Pages that looked great to a human were close to unreadable to a machine. Some of our best content sat behind a script that agents never executed. Our robots file had been written for Googlebot in a world where Googlebot is no longer the only visitor that matters. Redirects that had worked fine for years were quietly killing pages before an agent ever reached them.
We fixed all of it. Then we kept going, because the fixing turned out to be the easy half. The hard half was turning what we learned into something repeatable that we could run for a client, verify, and keep monitoring.
That is what the last several months have been. Here is what came out of it.
What actually changed in search
The headline number people repeat is that Google search "dropped in half." That is not what the data says, and we would rather give you the real figures than a scary one.
- 68% of U.S. Google searches ended without a single click during the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. Searches producing at least one click fell 22.9% over that period. SparkToro, via Similarweb clickstream data
- 60% drop in click through rate when an AI Overview appears. They now show on more than 20% of Google searches. SparkToro, 2026
- 38% year over year fall in Google referral traffic for publishers. Press Gazette
- 1B monthly users on Google AI Mode, with query volume more than doubling each quarter. Google I/O 2026
So the traffic did not fall by half. Something more interesting happened. The clicks left, but the buyers did not. Analysts are now reporting cases of brands losing roughly 30% of Google referral traffic year over year while revenue from search stayed flat. People are still finding companies. They are just finding them inside an AI answer instead of on a results page.
And here is the part that should get your attention: research on AI Overview citations found that brands appearing inside those answers see 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands absent from them.
Being cited is the new being ranked.
AI agents search like careful researchers, not like people in a hurry
This is the shift that surprises most business owners.
A human types three words into a search box. "IT support Detroit." An AI agent does something different. It breaks the request into several long, specific questions and runs all of them: "managed IT providers in Macomb County Michigan," "IT companies with 24 hour help desk for manufacturing," "average IT cost reduction managed services small business."
Those are long tail queries. Dozens of them, per request, executed in seconds.
Then the agent reads the pages it gets back, decides which sources are clear enough to trust, and writes one answer naming two or three companies. The user never sees the other forty results.
If your site is not readable at that moment, you are not in the answer. If you are not in the answer, for that buyer, you do not exist. There is no page two to be found on.
What an AI agent sees when it visits your site
Agents are fast, literal, and impatient. They do not admire your homepage animation. They read text, structure, and metadata, and they give up quickly. Here is what tends to break:
Content that only exists after JavaScript runs
Many agents fetch your raw HTML and move on. If your services, prices, and locations only appear after a script executes, a lot of agents see an empty page.
Redirect chains
Real time AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, and Perplexity-User have been observed giving up around the third redirect hop, while Googlebot tolerates ten. A chain that has been fine for Google for years can silently erase a page from AI answers, with no error report to warn you.
A robots file written for one bot
If your robots.txt has no AI specific rules, most AI crawlers fall back to your default directive, which means you may be blocking AI search crawlers by accident. The bots reaching your site now do three different jobs: some crawl to train models, some build a live search index, and some fetch a single page in real time because a user just asked a question. One blanket rule no longer expresses what you actually want.
No structured data
Without schema markup, the agent has to guess whether "Wizcom Limited" is a company, a product, or a typo. Guessing costs it confidence, and low confidence means you do not get quoted.
Answers buried in paragraph six
Agents extract. If the answer to "what does this company do" is hidden under three paragraphs of brand storytelling, it may never be found.
Your AI Visibility Score ?? / 31
Status: not yet measured
So what score would your website get?
Here is the good news: you do not have to figure out where to start.
That is usually the hard part. You now know the problem exists, you suspect it applies to you, and the next step looks like a research project you do not have time for. Most people stop right here.
So we removed that step.
Enter your website address below and we’ll run the audit.
Your results appear immediately: no waiting, no back and forth.
No commitment. No sales call attached. If you want to take the report and fix everything yourself, that is a fine outcome and we will tell you how.
We are offering this because the fastest way to show you the problem is real is to show it to you on your own site. We got our own bad score first, so this is not a lecture.
